The Auburn Police Department will be conducting a free prescription and over-the-counter drug collection event on Saturday, October 28, 2017, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m behind City Hall.
Community members are invited to bring their unused prescription and over-the-counter medications to this event for disposal. Participants are asked to empty their medications from their original containers and place them into a secured plastic bag prior to arriving at the event. Liquid drugs may be left in their original containers. We will not be accepting sharps, lancets, needles, medical waste, aerosols, hydrogen peroxide, or illicit drugs.
This event is part of a national campaign by the United States Department of Justice to address a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home medicine cabinets are highly susceptible to theft and abuse. Prescription drug abuse in our community is a serious problem, especially for our teenagers and young adults. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from home medicine cabinets. In addition, proper disposal of drugs protects our environment by reducing the amount of harmful substances deposited in our water supplies and landfills.
