Volunteer Vision Statement

To support and supplement the staff of the Auburn Police Department and the City of Auburn by harnessing the power of individuals through education, training, and volunteer service to make the Auburn Community safer, stronger, and better place to live.
The volunteers assist the agency and community to be better prepared in areas of crime prevention, responses to crime, public service, health issues, terrorism threats and disasters of all kinds.

  • Transportation of Court and Allied Agency Documents

  • Records Retention/Destruction
  • Mobile Command Vehicle 24/7 Drivers & Incident Support Team
  • Parades, Cruise Night, Gold Country Fair, and Special Events traffic control
  • Community meetings liaison: Safe Kids, Old Town Business Association, etc
  • Investigations Division Support: pawn slips, cold case follow-up calls, etc
  • Carwash Day...Disabled Person Collaboration Days each summer
  • Support for Placer County Law Enforcement Chaplaincy

  • Radar/Traffic Trailer/Speed Awareness support team for patrol officers
  • Vehicle Tag & Tow Support Program
  • Citizen Patrols for Residential Neighborhoods, Parks, Business Districts

Citizens Awareness Academy Application

The Citizen Awareness Academy is a program designed to give participants a working knowledge of the Auburn City Police Department. The class provides an in-depth view into the various areas of law enforcement. It is an educational and informative program that allows citizens the opportunity to learn about the issues that affect law enforcement efforts in the City of Auburn. The course usually consists of 8-10 sessions, held once a week for approximately 2 hours per week.


Citizens Awareness Academy Goals

  • To provide department transparency: The Citizen Awareness Academy helps residents of Auburn to better understand how the police work in their community: To know more about the men and women who are serving their community; to help them understand how and why decisions are made while performing that duty.
  • To educate the residents of Auburn: The Citizen Awareness Academy educates the residents of Auburn and heightens citizen awareness towards crime and crime prevention, and to inform citizens on Auburn Police Department procedures and practices.
  • To promote citizen advocacy for the department: The Citizen Awareness Academy develops a partnership between citizens and the department improving communications leading to better public service and closer relationships between the department and community needs. A desired result is the fostering of Citizen Volunteerism.

Where did the concept originate?
The program originated in Orlando, Florida in 1984. Orlando was the first city in the United States to start a Citizens' Awareness Academy.

What was the Auburn Police Department's incentive for starting a Citizens' Awareness Academy?
We feel the more information the public has about the police department, less fears and misconceptions will exist.

Where does the class meet?
Participants meet at Auburn City Hall's Rose Room. There will be a total of approximately twenty-two (22) hours of instruction by police officers. All classes are free.

What are the requirements to attend the Citizens' Awareness Academy?
You must be at least 18 years old and live or work in the Auburn area. You must have no felony convictions. The Chief of Police may waive these requirements.
