The City of Auburn has several ways for the residents and businesses to recycle to maintain compliance with the California State Assembly Bill 939 such as:

Businesses interested in participating in the Placer Green Business Certification Program
are encouraged to call the Business Environmental Resource Center at 916-874-2100

The following items can be placed in the blue bags:
- Convenient Drop Off Locations for Newspaper, Office Paper and Cardboard
- Residential Blue Bag Recycling Program
- Residential Green Waste Program
Recovering Recyclable Materials
City of Auburn's garbage that is collected - both residential and commercial - is processed at the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) where recyclable materials are recovered from the garbage, including:- Glass - all colors
- Metal - ferrous/metallic items
- Paper - All paper, including:
- Cardboard
- Junk Mail
- Newspaper
- Office paper
- Paperboard
- Phone books
- Scrap paper
- Plastic - many grades
- Wood and green waste

Business Recycling
The City of Auburn and Recology Auburn Placer encourage businesses to recycle. Many local businesses and schools participate in recycling programs for cardboard, aluminum cans, glass and office paper.- Mandatory Commercial Recycling Regulation - Effective July 1, 2012 (PDF)

Residential Recycling
The City of Auburn and Recology Auburn Placer have implemented a residential recycling program called the "Blue Bag Program." Through this program Recology Auburn Placer will deliver "blue bags" to City residents. The "blue bags" are then placed next to or into their garbage can on their designated pick up day.The following items can be placed in the blue bags:
- All paper, including:
- Copy paper
- Envelopes
- Junk mail
- Magazines
- Newspaper
- Paper
- Plastic containers - please remove the lids
- Glass containers - please remove the lids
- Aluminum and Steel/ Tin Cans
