1. What is the purpose of conducting a Citizens' Awareness Academy?

- To educate the residents of Auburn
- To provide department transparency
- To promote citizen advocacy
- To give the public information on how the Police Department works and its policies and procedures, through a series of classes involving instruction by Police Officers, Dispatchers, Volunteers, and other Law Enforcement Professionals.

2. Where did the concept originate?

The program originated in Orlando, Florida in 1984. Orlando was the first city in the United States to start a Citizens' Awareness Academy.

3. What was the Auburn Police Department's incentive for starting a Citizens' Awareness Academy?

We feel the more information the public has about the police department, less fears and misconceptions will exist.

4. Where does the class meet?

Participants meet at Auburn City Hall's Rose Room. There will be a total of approximately 22 hours of instruction by police officers. All classes are free.

5. What are the requirements to attend the Citizens' Awareness Academy?

You must be at least 18 years old and live or work in the Auburn area. You must have no felony convictions. The Chief of Police may waive these requirements.

6. How do you apply?
