Citizen's Awareness Academy

The Citizen's Awareness Academy is a program designed to give participants a working knowledge of the Auburn Police Department. The class provides an in-depth view into the various areas of law enforcement. It is an educational and informative program that allows citizens the opportunity to learn about the issues that affect law enforcement efforts in the City of Auburn.

The no-cost, 12-week program (plus an optional day at the firearm range) begins February 19, 2020. Interested residents can learn about municipal policing, including but not limited to procedures involving patrol, investigations, elder abuse and fraud, multidisciplinary interview process and center, crime prevention, neighborhood watch, vehicle operations, arrest and control techniques, 911 communications, animal control, volunteers in law enforcement and how the department interacts with other local, county, state and federal law enforcement agencies. The course is usually held once a week for approximately 3 hours per week.

Citizens Awareness Academy Goals

  • To provide department transparency - The Citizen's Awareness Academy helps residents of Auburn to better understand how the Auburn Police Department works in our community.
  • To know more about the men and women who are serving their community - Helping them understand how and why decisions are made while performing that duty.
  • To educate the residents of Auburn - The Citizen's Awareness Academy educates the residents of Auburn and heightens citizen awareness towards crime and crime prevention, and to inform citizens on Auburn Police Department procedures and practices.
  • To promote citizen advocacy for the department - The Citizen's Awareness Academy develops a partnership between citizens and the department improving communications leading to better public service and closer relationships between the department and community needs. A desired result is the fostering of Citizen Volunteerism.

Applications will be accepted until the day before the start of class. If the class is filled, some applicants can be placed on a waiting list for the next session.

 The academy will meet on Wednesdays, beginning February 19, 2020, through May 6, 2020, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, in the Rose Room at City Hall. City Hall is located at 1225 Lincoln Way, Auburn, CA 95603. Participants must be 18 years of age or older (younger participants will be considered on a case-by-case basis), live in the Auburn area, and have no felony convictions.
